Two months after the jail guard was found dead of a single gunshot wound to the head, a felony murder charge was filed against the man who escaped from jail with her.
The Lauderdale County District Attorney said in a statement that the death of the corrections officer was caused by someone other than White.
The prison guard had a secret romantic relationship with White while he was in prison.
After a car chase with US Marshalls in Indiana, the two fugitives were captured on May 9.
The U.S. marshals service told Forbes that White appeared to have shot himself in the head after surrendering.
In May, the coroner's office ruled that White died by suicide.
It is not clear if the new charges mean that White's death was not a suicide. According to an Alabama news outlet, police say that the couple made a "suicide pact” in which he would die in a gunfight with authorities and she would kill herself. Forbes did not get a response from Connolly.
According to authorities, White helped White escape from the Lauderdale County jail in late April when she showed up to take him to a mental health evaluation. A multi-state search was launched after she left her patrol car at a shopping center. The pair, who were caught after they crashed a pickup truck during a police chase, had begun to develop a special relationship in 2020, according to the Lauderdale Sheriff. The vehicle turned over after officers rammed it into a ditch. According to investigators, White shot herself after the crash. White was charged with first degree escape in connection to the jail break.
