A petition urging the Ukrainian government to allow same-sex marriage has amassed tens of thousands of signatures and has been sent to the president.
In war-torn Ukranian, same-sex couples deserve the opportunity to start a family and have an official document to prove it, according to a petition signed by more than 28,000 people.
Any petition that gets more than 25,000 signatures in Ukranian is automatically considered by the president, who must respond within 10 days.
Every day can be the last according to the author of the petition. People of the same sex should be able to start a family with an official document. Traditional couples have the same rights.
Zelenksy is not sure if he would support the legalization of same-sex marriage. Zelensky said he didn't want to say anything negative about the gay community in the country. Zelensky said, "We all live in an open society where each one can choose the language they speak, their ethnic background and orientation." For God's sake, leave them alone. He has come under fire from gay rights groups in Ukranian for not dismissing Oleksiy Arestovych, one of his closest advisors who said members of the LGBTQ+ community are deviant.
Same-sex partnerships are not legally recognized in Ukraine. Negative societal attitudes impede the effect of laws in practice, according to the European Institute. 38.2% of Ukrainians had a negative view of the LGBTQ+ community, down from 60.4% in 2016 according to a study.
There are parades and marches from around the world.
