Centers for Disease Control Director Rochelle Walensky said Tuesday that vulnerable adults should not wait until the fall for omicron-specific Covid-19 shots and should get boosted as soon as possible.

According to Walensky, waiting until October or November is not a good plan.

Hospitalization rates from Covid have doubled since April because of the highly contagious BA.4 and BA.5 substrains, while Anthony Fauci warned that the "threat to you is now."

The CDC recommends booster shots for everyone ages 5 years and up in order to be considered up to date with their shots, and most people should wait at least five months after their primary vaccinations to get the booster.

The White House is said to be considering expanding eligibility for second booster shots to all adults to fight rising cases of Covid.

Adults over the age of 50 and those with compromised immune systems should get a second booster shot, according to the agency.

Big Number

A total of 103,912. The average number of coronaviruses infections per day in the U.S. was roughly 30,000 for the week ending July 10, up from roughly 30,000 in early April, but still below a January peak of more than 600,000 cases a day.

Surprising Fact

As of last week, the Omicron subvariant BA.5 accounted for more than half of all coronaviruses infections in the U.S.

Key Background

Two weeks ago, the FDA advised pharmaceutical companies to make booster shots. The strains were first discovered in South Africa, where they became dominant, and eventually made their way into the U.S. By the end of June, BA.4 and BA.5 were the main substrains of Covid in the U.S. The World Health Organization on Monday recommended that people over the age of 5 with compromised immune systems get a second booster shot in Europe, where coronaviruses are on the rise.
