Heardle, a music recognition game that has shot up in popularity in the past year, is going to be acquired bySpotify.
The deal will push Spotify further into its mission to become a more interactive app, as it invests in video, livestreaming and podcasts.
Users are asked to guess a song based on its opening notes. Users get a few extra seconds to guess the song with each hint. Wordle, a game that was acquired by The New York Times, inspired that game.
According to the company, millions of players use Heardle.
The look and feel of the game will remain the same, meaning that it will be a stand alone game on the website. It will be free for players as well. After the game, players will be able to listen to the full song on Spotify.
The game is now available in a number of countries. The company said it will expand into more markets.
At the company's investor day last month, Daniel Ek said that the company is doubling down on music discovery within the app in an effort to draw more users into the app.
The company said that they are planning to integrate Heardle and other interactive experiences more fully into the service to allow music lovers to connect more deeply with artists and challenge friends.
