  • Biden apologized that her words were not pure admiration and love.

The first lady was criticized by a Hispanic journalists' group for her Monday speech in which she compared diversity among Hispanics to breakfast taco culture.

One of the former presidents of UnidosUS built it with diversity in mind, according to Biden.

She said the Spanish word "bodegas" instead of "bodegas".

The crowd cheered when the comments were made, and Biden laughed.

A lack of cultural knowledge and sensitivity to the diversity of Latinos in the region is what the National Association of Hispanic Journalists said.

The group encouraged Dr. Biden and her speech writing team to use the time in the future to better understand the complexity of our people and communities.

We are not a group of people who eat tortillas. Latino heritage is shaped by many different cultures and traditions. We shouldn't be reduced to stereotypes.

The First Lady apologized that her words conveyed anything but pure admiration and love for the Latino community.

The Republicans seized on Biden's comments about Hispanics being as unique as tortillas. The Hispanics are leaving the Democratic Party.

Steve Guest, an advisor to Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas, asked "Which White House speech writer just won a bet for getting the first lady to say something like this?"

Janet Murgua, the president and CEO of UnidosUS, said that she was honored to host Biden. Privileged to talk to her.
