Scientists have been stumped by the mystery of the god described in the ancient city of Palmyra. A researcher says she has solved the case.

The city flourished as a center of trade around 2,000 years ago, connecting the Roman Empire with trade routes in Asia.

According to Science in Poland, a news site run by the Polish government and independent journalists, the deity is referred to as "he whose name is blessed forever," and "lord of the universe." Around 2,000 years ago, many of these inscriptions were written.

A researcher at the University of Wrocaw in Poland compared the inscriptions from the ancient city of Palmyra to the ones found in Mesopotamia. The gods in Mesopotamia were referred to as the anonymous god from the city of Palmyra.

"Bel-Marduk" was referred to as "merciful." "lord of the world" is a title similar to "lord of the universe", according to the sky god.

According to Science in Poland, the anonymous "god" mentioned in the inscriptions is not a single god, but multiple deities. The name of the deities was not mentioned as a sign of respect, according to her.

When people wrote inscriptions that invoked divine intervention, they didn't always reach out to a specific god but instead to any god that would listen to their prayers.

Every god who listened and showed favor to requests was praised.

Scholars not involved in the research were contacted by Live Science to have their say. Researchers reacted cautiously to the proposal.

"Schneider presented his hypothesis to the scientific community, which will discuss it and each scholar will decide to accept or reject it, presenting their counterarguments in the latter case," said Leonardo Gregoratti, a researcher who has studied the history and archaeology of the area.

One researcher, who commented on condition that they not be named, agreed that the unnamed deity probably refers to multiple deities, but was concerned that some of the Babylonian texts that they studied dated centuries earlier than the inscriptions from Palmyra.

Requests for comment were not returned. The results of her research were published in an e-book.
