Amazon said on Monday that it is adding smart shopping carts to Whole Foods stores.

In the coming months, Dash Carts will be available at Whole Foods in Westford, Massachusetts, northwest of Boston.

Users can skip the checkout line by placing their cart in front of them. The Dash Cart was introduced in September of 2020.

The carts are built on Amazon's "Just Walk Out" technology. They use a combination of computer vision and sensors to identify items as they are placed in bags. The total price is adjusted by a display on the cart. Shoppers leave the store through a special lane and Amazon charges their credit card.

In addition to bringing the technology to Whole Foods, Amazon is also launching a bigger version of the Dash Cart, which will debut in the Massachusetts Whole Foods store, as well as some Fresh grocery stores. The upgraded cart will be able to fit up to four bags, instead of two, and will have a lower shelf for larger items.

The carts can be dropped off at the car. In order to test the technology, Amazon baked it in an oven and placed it in a giant freezer. Shoppers used to have to leave the carts in the store.

Amazon is expanding its cashierless technology. The Just Walk out system was introduced to Whole Foods and Fresh stores last year.
