SMACS 0723: Red arcs in the image trace light from galaxies in the very early Universe

This is the first full-colour picture from the new telescope, and it is a record-breaker.

The image is said to be the deepest, most detailed view of the Universe to date, and contains the light from many billion of years ago.

The image was shown to the US President.

In a global presentation on Tuesday, NASA is expected to release more pictures from James Webb.

The successor to the Hubble Space Telescope was launched in December of last year.

It will make all sorts of observations of the sky. Taking pictures of the very first stars to shine in the Universe more than 13 billion years ago is the other goal.

JWST history

The image unveiled before the president shows the capabilities of the man.

There is a group of galaxies in the Southern Hemisphere constellation of Volans.

The cluster is only about 4.5 billion light years away. The light of objects far away has been magnified by the large mass of this cluster.

The effect is similar to a zoom lens for a telescope.

The red arcs in the picture are caused by the distorted shape of the galaxies that existed 600 million years after the Bigbang.

It is better than that. Scientists can tell from the quality of the data that the telescope is beyond the most distant object in the picture.

This could be the deepest viewing field ever obtained.

For a long time Hubble used to stare at the sky. The objects were identified after a few hours of observation.

The European and Canadian space agencies will be releasing more colour imagery from Webb on Tuesday.

There is a telescope that can see in theIR.

The study of planets outside our Solar System is one of the topics to be discussed.

WASP-96 b is a giant planet that is more than 1000 light-years away from Earth. The chemistry of that atmosphere will be told by it.

It is hoped that one day it will be possible to spy on a planet that has the same gasses as the Earth.

The scientists at Nasa say they will not be disappointed by the outcome.

The first images are spectacular, according to the deputy project scientist.

They're just as good as the pictures. She told the news that the hints of the detailed science we're going to be able to do with them made her excited.

The programme scientist for the project believes that the public has grasped the significance of the new telescope.

The public is interested in the mission because of the design of the building. It appears to be a spaceship from the future.

Further imagery from the new telescope will be shown on Tuesday on a website. The presentation can be seen on the European Space Agency's web TV channel. The programming starts at 14:45 BST. The Canadian Space Agency has a channel on the internet. There will be a special programme on the Super Telescope on Thursday.
