Some of the largest night fliers are hawk moths. Many species are large enough to fit in your hand. Three new species from The Bahamas are breaking records at the opposite end of the size spectrum thanks to the work of a small team of researchers. They are one of the smallest found.

According to Deborah Matthews, a biological scientist at the museum, all of the new hawk moths are the smallest. The new species was co-authored by Matthews.

New species are discovered.

Some 1,700 species of hawk moths can be found around the world. They have incredible wingspans, as well as long tongues that they use to suck up food and drink. When fully unfurled, the world's longest proboscis is held by a hawk moths, which is just under 12 inches in length.

The length of their tongues can be used to predict what local flowers they feed on. Charles Darwin used this method to correctly predict the existence of a hawk moth with a long proboscis.

The study that led to the discovery of the new Caribbean species was started by Matthews and Miller when they were looking at the hawk moths in the Florida Museum.

It's not always easy to identify a new butterfly species. There can be subtle differences between monarch and viceroy butterflies that can be seen with a wing pattern. These differences are not always cut and dried. Researchers need to study their body parts. They had to make a detailed examination of the genitalia.

Matthews said that with genitalia you can cross- compare structures.

There were differences in the genitalia from the specimen that was examined. They thought they had three new species. They worked with the Florida Museum to sequence the genes from the specimen. Their suspicions were confirmed by the analysis of the genetic material.

The giant silk moths and hawk moths are similar to the butterflies of the moths world. For us to find three new hawk moths is a really big deal.

The life histories of the three new species are not known, but they are thought to feed on plants in the coffee family.

They are small.

The diversity of the islands in The Bahamas makes them very attractive to work with. Highly unique species are created when remote locations are present. Some of the strangest animals on the planet can be found in the islands. It's easier for plants and animals to spread on the islands due to their isolation, because they're close to Cuba and the U.S.

It might seem odd that the new moths are so small since they are endemic to The Bahamas. The giant tortoises on the Galapagos Islands and the Komodo dragons on Indonesian islands are examples of organisms that are much larger than their mainland cousins.

There are many species of insects in The Bahamas that are smaller than their mainland counterparts. Some zebra longwing butterflies are smaller than their mainland cousins.

The islands in the Bahamas archipelago are often among the first areas affected by Atlantic hurricanes and tropical storms at the peak of their power, according to researchers. It is possible that butterflies and moths with smaller wings are better equipped to survive heavy rain and wind on the islands. Outside of rainy seasons, the islands of The Bahamas have a tendency to get very dry for the rest of the year, which may affect the availability of food for caterpillar.

Going forward, the identification of these three new species will lead to more. morphospecies are a group of organisms that all look the same. Some individuals in a morphospecies have differences that differentiate them, such as the genitalia in these moths. In museums, these groups are put aside until they can be looked at more closely.

There are over one thousand morphospecies of moths identified in The Bahamas. The identity of the remaining 29% is still not known. Sometimes it just takes diving in yourself and learning the terminology for a certain group, even though studying all of them to identify which are separate species is a lot of work.
