You don't have to watch the first season of SNW or the second season of the original series to appreciate this video from miksmart5 There is a reason the two series are telling the same story. A chance to avoid his fate is what Pike sees when he sees a chance to avoid his fate. When the events of "Balance of Terror" take place, a future pike will visit the current pike and show him the disastrous consequences if he still commands the enterprise. Captain Kirk, who is played by PaulWesley, is still present at the conflict.

While Kirk attacked a lone Romulan ship and avoided a war, Pike's attempt to avoid hostilities got many people killed, including Spock, meaning the Vulcan isn't around to save the universe the many, many times he does. If he tries to avoid his fate, things will get very, very bad, and so he ends up embracing it, no matter the cost to himself.

The guy who only returned to Star Trek for Strange New Worlds is still thrilled by this homage. I had the feeling that the show was doing something very fan service-y, but I didn't think the finale would work for me. I didn't know "Balance of Terror" existed until I read io9 Fearless Leader's recap and watched the classic episode again.

The second season of Strange New Worlds won't be on the app until next year. I am looking forward to seeing what the show does next.
