Heard claimed that juror No. 15 participated in the trial even though he wasn't called for jury duty. According to her lawyers, the juror is the same person who was called for jury duty. It is not known if this person showed up for jury duty or not, as jurors have to fill out a questionnaire with their birth date. According to Heard's lawyers, her rights to a jury trial and due process were violated and therefore, a mistrial should be declared and a new trial ordered.

Key Background

Heard wrote an op-ed for the Washington Post in which she described herself as a public figure representing domestic abuse, but she did not name her husband in the piece. In a six week long televised trial that captured the attention of millions, Depp denied abusing Heard and said she was the one who instigated the fight. A jury ordered Heard to pay $10.4 million for defaming the actor. The jury awarded Heard $2 million for defaming her opponent. Heard's lawyer said shortly after the ruling that she would appeal.
