The New York Mets will host the Atlanta Braves on Monday in the opener of a three-game series.

A day after being acquired by the Braves, second baseman Robinson Cano will bat ninth and start against the Mets' Max Scherzer.

It will be a surprise reunion between the first-place Mets and Robinson Cano, who was designated for assignment by New York on May 2 after batting just.195 in 12 games. Six days after the Mets released him, they still owed him nearly 45 million dollars on his contract with the SeattleMariners.

He sat out last season because of his second suspension for performance- enhancing drugs. The eight-time All-Star struggled in his brief stint with the Padres, batting just.091 (3 for 33) in 12 games, but rebounded nicely at Triple-A El Paso, where he hit.333 with three home runs and 20 RBIs in 21 games.

The addition of Cano to Atlanta's roster will allow him to play second base with Arcia, who is hitting.252 with three homers and 17 RBIs in 123 at-bats. The Braves activated outfielder Adam Duvall from the paternity list and optioned infielder Mike Ford to Triple-A.

The Braves have been relying on Arcia as their second baseman because of the injury to Albies. Brian Snitker said he was pleased with Arcia's defense.

The Braves have won 29 of their last 37 games and are 1.5 games behind the Mets in the NL East.

In a blockbuster trade, the Mets acquired the All-Star closer in exchange for second baseman Robinson Cano from the M's. The Yankees shipped five players to Seattle in exchange for the last five years of Robinson Cano's contract.

He played 168 games for the Mets, batting.270 with 24 homers and 72 RBIs.
