After winning the Stanley Cup, the Colorado Avs are reshuffling.

Chris MacFarland will become the fifth general manager in Colorado team history after being named the team's president of hockey operations.

MacFarland has been the Avs' assistant GM for seven years.

The general manager position was taken over by Sakic. Colorado made bold trades for players such as center Nazem Kadri and right wing Mikko Rantanen during a rebuild overseen by the Hockey Hall of Famer. After making the playoffs for four straight seasons, the Avs won the Stanley Cup for the first time in 22 years.

The Jim Gregory General Manager of the Year Award is given to the NHL's top general manager in each of the next two decades.

Joe is a great guy. Some of the cycles in pro sports are going to happen. "Staying good all the time is the hardest thing to do," the owner of the Colorado team said after winning the Cup.

MacFarland stays with the Colorado team. The Avs refused to grant permission for him to interview for the job of general manager in San Jose, which was one of the reasons why he was pursued by several teams.

MacFarland worked in the hockey operations department for 16 years. He was credited with helping create the team that hoisted the Cup after joining the team in May 2015.

Colorado has only 16 players under contract for next season and eight forwards. Nathan MacKinnon is one year away from unrestricted free agency.
