Crossing the U.S.-Mexico Border

Drivers need to cross the U.S.– Mexico border by land.

U.S. citizens are required to present a valid passport when entering Mexican territory. Minors are not allowed exceptions.

U.S. citizens can enter Mexico by land if they have a passport book or passport card. You can apply for the permit at the official government website.

When crossing the border, drivers need to make sure their vehicles have valid proof of registration.

Travelers who want to drive beyond border zones need to apply for a permit through Banjercito. At the border or online, you can apply. There are fees that apply.

There is no requirement for a permit in the Baja Peninsula.

Crossing the U.S.-Canada Border

Proof of citizenship and identity is required for U.S. citizens to enter Canada. A valid U.S. passport, passport card, or NEXUS card is needed. If you're a member of the FAST program, you can enter Canada by land or sea, but not by air.

A valid passport, a NEXUS or FAST card, a U.S.-approved enhanced driver's license or enhanced identification card, and a secure certificate of Indian Status are required for Canadians to enter the U.S. by land.

passport cards can only be used for driving or floating across borders, so a passport book is required for flying into either country. For use of the Ready Lanes at land border crossing, passport cards are a must.
