Gareth Bale has joined MLS to play for LAFC, and the move to the United States gives the famous golf fan access to around 15,000 courses across the country. Getty

Bale is a soccer player It's a matter of fact at this point, even though those words sound like gibberish. The man is here! Four years ago, the man who hit the bicycle kick in the final of the European club competition was signed by LAFC. The LAFC hat reveal was done by him.

The Bale of 2022. and the Bale of 2018? are not the same player. His name doesn't carry as much weight as it used to, but he still has a resemblance to a elf and has a bun on his head. Over the past few seasons, injuries and falling in and out of favor at Real Madrid have hampered his playing time.

There is also the golf thing. Bale loves a good game of golf so much that his Welsh teammates unfurled a flag that said "Wales first, golf second, Real Madrid third." When Bale arrived for training at Madrid earlier this year, he was told to "go play golf" by some of the fans who were against him.

Bale should be able to produce attacking verve and vigor for LAFC against opposition that will not be as stringent as LaLiga's best defenses, but there is a question of how good he will actually be. Many of the game's superstars have come to MLS and discovered that soccer in the US doesn't just acquiesce to fame. The travel, the weather extremes, and the sometimes-playing-on-a- baseball-field-ness of the league are all factors. It isn't the easiest place to do well.

We decided to provide a primer on some of the competition Bale will face in the league, both his Western Conference rivals and some giants from the East. The Professional Major Golfers' Association League Soccer Tour is the format we decided to deliver it in.

LA Galaxy: Riviera Country Club (Pacific Palisades, California)

Is it really LA? Half of the LAFC battle is going to get to Carson.

LAFC's rivals are something of a dilemma for them. What seems like a simple game for LAFC is anything but in the history of the rivalry. It turns out, that's a lot like Riviera Country Club, which Jordan Spieth described as a surprisingly difficult course to Golf Digest in 2021. When you get in the rough it takes the spin off so you can't get into pins. "If you try and be cute with it, a lot of times when you miss the greens it's harder from where you missed them to hit your approach shot."

Don't make it seem cute. Put the ball in good places.

We started near Bale's home. We looked at the other golf courses and compared them to the league competition he's going to face.

Seattle Sounders: Chambers Bay (University Place, Washington)

If LAFC have to play in Seattle during the playoffs, you will get to see one of the loudest fans in the league.

The elements are against you at Lumen Field. Gary Player once called Chambers Bay the worst course he'd ever seen. The 2015 Open was marred by some questionable playing surfaces, something Bale might think about when he picks some black rubber out of his teeth. Chambers Bay has a 10 mile walk to play and no golf carts without a medical exemption allowed. It's best to leave Washington with the results you want.

New York City FC: Bethpage Black (Farmingdale, New York)

Tiger Woods said that the U.S. Open was the narrowest he'd ever played. He was talking about Bethpage Black, not NYCFC's pitch at Yankee Stadium. NYCFC have won most of their home games over the past five years by playing on a postage stamp.

It is possible for Bethpage Black to apply to the New York Red Bulls as a course for a New York City team.

San Jose Earthquakes: Cypress Point (Pebble Beach, California)

Cypress Point is a golf course with beautiful views of the Pacific Ocean. It's known for its difficulty, and I'm going to level up with everyone hoping to see him succeed, the Quakes probably aren't going to be as hard as Cypress Point. A nice stadium is what they have. The pitch is very nice. The golf course is similar.

Philadelphia Union: Pine Valley Golf Club (Pine Valley, New Jersey)

Pine Valley is a difficult course and is located in New Jersey.

Pine Valley has never hosted a major championship despite being named a top 100 course. A good team, even a great team, but one without its signature moment is what the Philadelphia Union are like. Booking a tee time at Pine Valley is much easier than getting a result at Subaru Park. Is there a word of advice for you. If you want to hit the ball as hard as possible, try to do it as far away from the target as possible. This guy is a center back.

Atlanta United: Augusta National (Augusta, Georgia)

There is a stop at Augusta National on the PMGALS tour. It's slopes and greens inspire a sense of reverence and awe for any golfer.

Augusta has a history similar to Atlanta United and Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Standing outside of Mercedes-Benz feels like standing next to the Death Star, and being inside of it when Atlanta United scores a goal sounds similar to when it blew up, and then blew up again.

Atlanta United may not have regained the blinding assortment of talent that brought them the MLS Cup in a rough draft. Bale's stop in the league isn't complete until he plays in MBS, and Atlanta United is the only team in the league that can shock and awe. If LAFC can locate him. Augusta is close to Atlanta by American standards and only takes two hours to get there.
