Herta will drive a McLaren Formula One car this week as part of his testing with the team.

The American with the best chance of entering Formula One in the near future will drive the team's car at Portimao on Monday and Tuesday.

Herta needs to be prepared for a free practice session at a grand prix later this year.

He has won seven races in the open air.

Formula One has not had an American driver on the grid in over two years.

Herta doesn't have many options to join the grid. The proposed F1 team was supposed to be led by Herta, but takeover talks with Alfa Romeo owners broke down.

If Herta wants a shot at McLaren, he'll have to wait until at least 2024, as Daniel Ricciardo has a deal until the end of next year.

With Daniel Ricciardo's disappointing run of form this year raising speculation McLaren might move on from the Australian driver at the end of the year, Zak Brown suggested the team has "mechanisms" to end the contract early. According to sources close to the Australian, he will see out his existing deal with the team.

The hopes of an F1 driver are not limited to Herta. The first American driver to win a race in the F1 feeder series Formula 2 is a 21-year old from Florida. Williams has a driver program.

There will be three races in the U.S. next year, with a race down Las Vegas' famous strip joining the Miami Grand Prix and the U.S. Grand Prix.
