Europe is entering a period of hot weather this week with the possibility of some record-breaking temperatures.

Over the past few days, temperatures have been 4-5 degrees above the seasonal norm, leading to highs of 40C. The heat is likely to build even more intensely to about 7C above average, with maximum temperatures touching 46-47C in Sevilla.

As low pressure develops to the west of Europe, this intense heat will surge northward through France, potentially reaching the UK by the weekend, as well as sweeping eastwards into central Europe. By this weekend, parts of France, Germany and even into the Low Countries are likely to reach 40C. The all-time temperature record of 38.7C set in Cambridge in July is at risk of being broken.

As the heat persists in western Europe, temperatures in parts of the central and eastern Mediterranean will rise to about 10C above normal. By Monday of next week, it is possible that central, southern and western Europe will experience temperatures much higher than normal.

The north-eastern part of Europe will be cooler than usual this week due to a strong balance in the atmosphere.

The Indian monsoon is causing flooding in central areas of the country. The Indian Meteorological Department warns of more than 200mm of rain in a 24 hour period. The flooding in these areas may get worse with more rain and storms this coming week.
