Both organizations put new car models through a series of crash and safety tests, scoring each for their degree of protection.
If you choose a car on this list, you can be sure that you will survive a crash, but in many cases you won't. The best models made the safest for you to drive are in this collection.
These car models go far beyond government mandated safety features. On this page, you can learn more.
Cars with perfect scores were what we looked for. We narrowed the field based on standard and available active safety features such as forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking.
Government mandated safety features are what we have grown used to. The federal government made them standards. Antilock brakes, stability control, traction control, and so forth are included.
The government also requires certain types of safety equipment. One for the driver and one for the passenger. Most passenger vehicles today come with at least six air bags. There are two mandated air bags, two front-side impact air bags, and two side curtain air bags.
Several models don't stop at that point. They might include a knee, front center, and rear-side impact bag. When one of our picks gives more than six bags, we point it out.
Safety features that are mandated by the government are referred to as active safety features. Antilock brakes and stability control are included. These are mandated features so we don't include them in our descriptions.
Active safety features that are not mandated by the government are what we looked at to determine the safest trim levels. Features like forward collision warning, blind-spot monitoring, automatic braking, and lane-keeping assist can be found here.
Other driver aids include adaptive cruise control, high beam assist, driver-awareness alert, and a head-up display.

A series of crashes are performed by the IIHS. The areas covered are driver side small overlap front, passenger side small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength, and head restraint.
The score is Good, Acceptable, Marginal, and Poor. Our picks scored six for six goods.
The IIHS looks at headlights, vehicle-to-vehicle front crash prevention, and vehicle-to-pedestrian front crash protection. The score is Superior, Advanced, and Basic. The LATCH child-seat anchor is evaluated.
Top Safety Pick and Top Safety Pick+ are the highest safety awards given by the IIHS. The models on our list have IIHS safety ratings.
The IIHS is more involved than the NHTSA testing. Crash tests are performed by NHTSA. A crash into a barrier is what the front test is about. The side test results are combined with the driver-door test results to arrive at the side test results. The NHTSA scoring has a roll over aspect. An evaluation of the likelihood of a vehicle rolling over is what it is. There is no crash test done.
The NHTSA gives one to five stars for each scenario. The highest score is five. An overall score is issued by NHTSA. The picks on this list have a 5-star score. There is a reason that a 5-star score isn't the case. There are six cars on our list. They are on this list because we don't think they should be left out.

It has lane-departure warning, forward collision warning, and traffic jam assist. Standard features include adaptive cruise control and high beam assist.
You can get blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and front-rear park assist if you lay out another $4,000. Upgrading the technology trim to get the extra safety features would be a good idea. If you want the Advance grade, you have to add all-wheel drive and a head-up display.
The Acura TLX has a driver's edge.

One of the finest interiors in its segment can be found in the audi a6 You should expect a lot of safety features in the A6 at its price. 10 airbags, auto-dimming rearview mirrors, and high-beam assist are included in the base Premium. Front-rear park assist, lane-departure warning, and forward collision warning are among its advanced driver aids.
Taking a step up to the Premium Plus would be a good idea. Traffic Jam Assist, left-turn assist with braking, blind-spot monitoring, and a surround-view camera are all included in the upgrade. The adaptive Matrix headlights with washers are included. In the IIHS and NHTSA tests, the A6 Allroad Quattro wagon did well.

The Convenience Package gives you blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and a surround-view camera. Those features are standard on the Premium Plus trim level, which also includes upgraded LED headlights, adaptive cruise control with Traffic Jam Assist, and Active Lane Assist. The top-of-the-line Prestige trims come with a head-up display. The Premium Plus grade is the safest one. The NHTSA hasn't rated the audi a7.

The smallest entry in the Genesis stable, the G70 sedan is fun to drive and safe. The 2.0T RWD Standard comes with a number of safety features. Standard features include high-beam assist, and an auto-dimming mirror. Automatic emergency braking and lane-following assist are also included. Standard features include lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, safe exit assist, adaptive cruise control, and driver attention warning. In a package loaded with other goodies, you can add front and rear park assist and rain-sensitive wipers.
A surround-view camera and a head-up display are added to the G70. We would keep the base 2.0T RWD Standard. All trims built after June 2021 are covered by the IIHS TSP+.

The value and advanced safety technologies of this sedan make it stand out. The Genesis G80 is available in an entry-level 2.5T trim that comes with nine safety features. High-beam assist and adaptive cruise control are also included. Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-keeping assist, and lane- following assist are included in the bundle of driver aids. Automatic emergency brakes are also included.
If you're willing to pay an additional $8,900, you can get the Prestige option package, which includes a surround-view monitor, blind-spot view monitor, and automatic rear braking. The remote smart parking assist is included. This feature allows you to finish parking your car in a tight spot if you use the keyfob. We would stay with the 2.5T for the money.

The Genesis G90 is a full-size luxury sedan that provides a real value within its segment. The Genesis G90 is less expensive than European rivals yet it has more safety features. The entry-level 3.3T Premium in this 2-model lineup comes with a number of safety features. High beam assist, adaptive cruise control, and a head-up display are included.
The advanced driver aids include forward collision warning, lane keeping assist, and safe exit assist. Automatic reverse braking and rear cross-traffic alert are standard. It's standard to have highway driving assist. A semi-autonomous driver-assistance system can accelerate, brake, and steer a car. Do you need more? We think the 3.3T is a good one.

The Honda HMC, +0.33% Accord is the only car that is not mentioned in the entire discussion. The Accord has a reputation for high resale values and safety. There are eight airbags, hill-start assist, and a rear-seat reminder in the baseLX. The lights are included in the package. Lane-departure warning with steering assist is one of the advanced safety features. Standard features include lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, high beam assist, and traffic-sign recognition.
Factory-installed options aren't included in Honda's marketing strategy. You need to move up to get more features. You get upgraded headlights, blind-spot monitoring, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror when you upgrade to the EX-L. We don't think it's worth it if you pick up a few safety features. The LX is recommended by us.

The Civic is offered as a sedan and a hatch. The sedan and hatch were both awarded IIHS awards. The Honda Civic sedan, hatch, and Si all achieved 5-star ratings from NHTSA. The base LX comes with high-beam assist and adaptive cruise control. There are three standard driver aids: lane-keeping assist, forward collision warning and traffic jam assist. There is a lane-departure warning.
Blind-spot monitoring and traffic sign recognition are added to the EX. If you move up to the top-of-the-line Touring, you'll get fog lights, an auto-dimming mirror, rain-sensing wipers, and front-rear park assist. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are features we would not pay thousands more for. We wouldn't change our mind about the LX.

The Honda Insight is similar to the Civic. It is characterized by its affordability, good fuel economy, and roomy interior. Front collision warning with automatic emergency braking is included in the entry-level EX. Lane-departure warning, road-departure warning, and lane-keeping assist are also included. Standard features include adaptive cruise control with low-speed follow, blind-spot monitoring, and high beam assist.
The price for moving up to the Touring grade is $29,790. It includes an auto-dimming rearview mirror. Staying with the EX will save you $4000.
You can get the best hybrid for less than $40,000.

The K5 has big shoes to fill in the 000270 lineup. The thing is doing so well. It seems like a more expensive car from the curb or one of the five seating positions. The base LX grade has a number of safety features. The rear passenger alert and rear-seat alert are also included. The lead vehicle departure alert is one of the advanced driver aids. Automatic emergency brakes and driver-attention warnings are included.
The K5 is a winning case for the sedan.
An auto-dimming rearview mirror is bundled with a Homelink transceiver. The safety features of the LX are generous, but we think it is time to upgrade to the LXS. You get blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and pedestrian front-collision mitigation. Rear-park assist is included in the EX grade if you step up to it. A surround-view camera, left-turn assist, automatic braking, front-park assist, and semi-autonomous driver assistance are included in the $3,600EX Premium Package. The LXS would be picked by us.

The first car that comes to your mind when talking about safe cars is probably the Toyota Camry. Several of our must have safety features were added to the Stinger. It is now even more civilized. The entry-level GT-line comes with a number of safety features. Automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, and lane-keeping assist are standard in every car. Lane-following assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear-park assist, and adaptive cruise control are also included.
An auto-dimming rearview mirror can be added for an additional $350. A few additional safety features are included in the price of the GT2 if you step up to it. A surround-view camera, adaptive headlights that bend as the front wheels turn, and upgraded projectionLED headlights are included. Standard is a head-up display. Pick up the auto-dimming rearview mirror if you want to stay with the GT- Line.

The Lexus ES is a quiet, comfortable ride. Quality, convenience, and safety are all part of the equation. There are a number of safety features in the base ES 250. Blind-spot monitoring, left-turn assist, and high-beam assist are included. There is a forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking.
The Premium Package includes front-rear park assist with braking. Stand-alone options include a head-up display and premium triple-beam led headlights. To get a surround-view camera, you need to move up to the Ultra Luxury. The list of options included the ES 250.

The Lexus IS is in the company of three other cars. Lexus juggled performance and safety in this small car. There are standard safety features in the base 300 that include 10 airbags, an auto-dimming driver-side outboard rearview mirror, and LED exterior lights. Lane-departure warning with steering assist, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, and forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking are also included. Automatic braking, lane-tracing assist, high-beam assist, and adaptive cruise control are standard.
The IS 300 has a lot of driver aids. We recommend adding the Premium triple-beamled headlights and the Panoramic View Monitor with intuitive parking assist. There is a surround-view monitor with front-rear park assist.
Cars, trucks and SUVs have the best resale value.

Mazda's Mazda3 is available in sedan and Hatchback configurations. Both did well in the tests. The base car is a steal. There is an impressive bundle of advanced driver aids. There are lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, and forward-collision warning. Other features include high-beam assist, adaptive cruise control, and driver-attention warning.
Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are included in the Select trim. If you want to add adaptive headlights and traffic-sign recognition, you need to upgrade to the Premium. We don't think either of them is worth the extra money. The Select trim is the best option.

The E-Class is offered as a sedan, station wagon, and convertible. The sedan is the only one that qualifies. The sedan and wagon have only been evaluated by the IIHS. The E 350 has seven airbags, high-beam assist, rear fog lights, and rain-sensitive wipers. Standard features include an auto-dimming rearview mirror. Driver aids include driver-attention warning, blind-spot monitoring, and forward collision warning.
You can add active parking assist, rear cross-traffic alert, and a surround-view camera to the Premium package if you pony up another $2,400. The driver assistance package can be added for another $1,950. It gives you a list of features like adaptive cruise control and active steering assist. Both option packages would be added to the E 350.

The Nissan Altima is a solid middle-of-the-road player in a segment dominated by the Toyota and Honda Accords. It works well in a driveway and on the road. The base S is less expensive than the two rivals, but it isn't as well equipped. There are only a few safety features from our list. Lane-departure warning and high-beam assist are included. Standard is a driver-attention alert system. You can add blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and rear-park assist for $475.
The S optional safety features are included in the price. adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning with steering assist, and ProPilot are included in Nissan's premium package. Nissan has a semi-autonomous driver-assistance system that can drive the car under certain conditions. You need to go all the way up to the Platinum to get the camera. We would go with the premium package.

The Nissan Maxima has high safety marks from the IIHS and NHTSA. In the entry-level SV trim, there are 10 airbags, high-beam assist, and a variety of exterior lights. Automatic emergency braking, traffic sign recognition, rear automatic braking, and driver alert warning are included.
You get a surround-view camera, front-rear park assist, and lane-departure warning with steering assist if you take a step up to the SR. If you want to get the surround-view camera and front-rear park assist, you should pick the SR.

The EyeSight Driver Assist bundle of safety features and high beam assist will cost you an extra $1,600. Automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-centering, and lane-collision warning are included in EyeSight.
You add adaptive headlights, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert when you upgrade to the limited. The EyeSight bundle and high-beam assist can be added with the automatic transmission. The automatic transmission is the way to go with the adaptive headlights.

You should go up a level to the Premium grade. The safety features are not increased by that alone. Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and LED fog lights are some of the goodies that come with option package OP 13 There is an auto-dimming rearview mirror.

You won't get any real ground on safety features if you move up to the upper two trims. It adds more performance. You can get the Enhanced AutoPilot with full self- driving capability for another $10,000.

The Toyota Camry is one of the few cars in history that has achieved success. It is a family slayer. It comes out of the box with Toyota's Safety Sense 2.5+. There is a lane-departure warning with steering assist. Also standard are lane-tracing assist and high-beam assist. The lights are standard and so are the DRLs.
A $1,280 package that includes blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and more can be added to the base LE. That is the safest value you can give.

The Toyota corolla sedan and hatch are doing well in IIHS and NHTSA testing. The best selling car in history is the corolla. The base L grade has a lot of our recommended safety features. The standard safety package includes lane-departure warning with steering assist and lane-tracing assist. Lane-keeping assist is also as is.
The Convenience Package includes blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert. The safety option is standard with the first one, the XLE. Theadaptive headlights are on the options list. We would go with the convenience package.

The advanced package is recommended.

The standard fare helps the V60 make the list. Key features include auto-dimming mirrors, hill-descent control, and high beam assist.
The advanced driver's aids include forward collision warning, lane-departure warning, and lane-keeping assist. Standard features include blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert. The Advanced package has a head-up display, surround-view camera, and Pilot Assist Driver Assistance system. It is a semi-autonomous driving aid that can drive under certain conditions.
