Bob Jungels
Jungels missed last year's Tour and the Tokyo Olympics after being diagnosed with endofibrosis

Bob Jungels won the ninth stage of the Tour de France.

After opening up a gap on the descent, the AG2R Citroen rider was able to stay clear for over 60 km.

France's Thibaut Pinot tried to catch him but finished fourth.

Tadej Pogacar is the race leader.

With a sprint to the finish, Pogacar strengthened his position in the yellow jersey, taking time out of most of his general classification rivals.

The duo both picked up three seconds on Britain's Geraint Thomas, who finished alongside his Ineos Grenadiers team-mate Adam Yates.

Jungels bounces back

After being diagnosed with a narrowing of the arteries, Jungels was unable to compete in the Tokyo Olympic Games or the Tour de France.

After testing positive for Covid-19 in the week before the race, his participation at this year's Tour was only confirmed late on.

He said he was overwhelmed. It's huge. This is what I wanted. This is a big deal for the team. It's my style of racing and I'm just happy that I was able to take the victory this way.

I saw that my shape was improving. I knew I had to do it from far away because I wouldn't have been able to ride away from the favorites.

Being in the mix and winning a stage is a big step and I took all the risks I could. I would like to thank my team and everyone who believed in me.

Guillaume Martin became the third rider to leave the race after testing positive for Covid.

The rest of the team will be tested on Monday before the rest day.

The race will begin on Tuesday with a ride from Morzine Les Portes du Soleil to Megeve.
