The film starred Jeff Bridges as a game developer named Kevin Flynn who was transported into the world of a mainframe computer, and was directed by Steven Lisberger. A production studio was supposed to be created to make an animated film, but instead it was used to make a live-action movie. The Last Starfighter and the original tron are two of cinema's earliest films to feature extensive computer-generated imagery.
The movie made $50 million at the box office on a $17 million budget, making it one of the best-reviewed movies of the year. The film scored an Oscar nomination for sound and costume design, but not for visual effects because the Academy thought it was cheating. The film was a cult classic even though it wasn't very good. It ended up being very influential over at Disney, with then-Pixar and Disney animation head John Lasseter saying in 2010 that if it weren't for tron, Toy Story wouldn't exist. It is both a franchise and an intellectual property, but also sort of not. Prior to the release of 2010'sTron Legacy, the most that came from it was being a part of Disneyland and video games throughout the 80s and early 2000s. Legacy went on to become its own box office success, making $400 million globally, which was still impressive back then, but attempts at continuingTron haven't gone well. The series, which was set between the two films, ended after a single season. There have been multiple short stint comics intended to follow up on threads from the original film, but nothing substantial. Some people who weren't born in the 80s or didn't see Legacy may only know of the movie through Disney figurines or the soundtrack by Daft Punk.
Even though it is a Disney movie, they are not in a rush to continue the story even though there have been rumors for years. In the lead-up to the release of Top Gun: Maverick, it was Legacy director Joseph Kosinski who revealed that he was close to making a third iteration of the sci-fi franchise. The entire movie was storyboarded and written by him. It makes sense to put your money into a known property when you have other properties under your umbrella. That is alright. It seems like the story of the Flynn family and adventures of the Grid will remain unfinished if there isn't a 3rd film in the series.
