Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer fights for her daughters' right to abortion following the fall of Roe v. Wade: 'We must lead'

The fight for reproductive rights and abortion access is a personal one for the Michigan governor.

She talked to The Washington Post about her daughters. I have had more rights than they have.

The conversations she has had with her daughters have focused on planning for their long-term reproductive health and creating plans in the event of an emergency.

Sherry said she lived on a college campus. There are people who would make me have a baby. I've made the decision despite it being a scary thought.

Sexual assault isn't theoretical for theWhitmer family. The future governor was raped in college. She came to terms with the fact that her daughters are not guaranteed and acknowledged her access to care.

As she encourages the Biden administration to protect abortion and contraceptive access, she keeps in mind her daughters.

"Americans deserve to know all their legal options as they seek vital health care," she wrote in a letter to the secretaries of health and human services. We need to lead.
