John Wall said he's happy to be joining the LA Clippers team that won't need him to be Batman every night for them to win.
In his first comments since signing with LA, Wall believes he can help fill a missing component for the Clippers at point guard.
Leonard is expected to return after missing all of last season due to a torn rightACL. In his career, Wall has been a part of some of the most talented rosters.
Wall said at the Las Vegas Summer League that he doesn't have to be Batman every night for the team to win. I don't want to have to be the Batman every night in order to win. Anyone can be Batman on our team.
He hasn't played in the NBA since April 23, 2021. He didn't play for the Houston Rockets last season.
During the 2020-21 season with Houston, Wall played a total of 40 games. He missed the entire season because of an injury. He only played in a total of 73 games in the last two seasons because of injuries.
Wall said that he doesn't think about injuries when he gets between the four lines. I go out there and try to win. I'm trying to get back to this position so I can return to the league.
I have never been in a worse place in my life. I don't think a lot of people could have gotten through what I went through -- losing my mom, losing my grandma, tearing my achilles, trying to find myself, and getting some of that love more than anything taken away from me.
The five-time All-Star, who averaged 20.6 points and 6.9 assists in 2020-21 for the Astros, said he was looking to join a team with which he wouldn't have to carry the load.
Before he joined the Clippers, Wall said he didn't care about the other teams. "The other teams are great, and I'm glad teams wanted to come after me, but I kind of looked at the picture of where I don't have to be the John Wall from 2016 and have to carry the load and do all those." It's a great situation for me to be there because I believe LA was missing a piece of having a point guard.
According to league sources, Wall will compete for the starting point guard job. Wall said he's fine with whatever role is asked of him.
Wall is happy to play basketball again. I'm a person who competes. Are you mad if you don't start? I don't pay much attention. If I get a chance to compete for a spot, I'll take it. If I don't, we know how talented Reggie Jackson is and what he's done for this team and helping these guys out when they're not around. He's a good piece even when they were healthy. The person who gets the spot is awesome.
Wall made it clear that he can still play at the level he was in the previous year, when he averaged 23.1 points and 10.7 assists for the Wizards.
He said that he had all the things he had in the previous year. I only played 40 games two years ago, but last year wasn't my fault or my choice.
Wall thinks he will be a problem for opposing teams.
It will be more difficult for them to defend. I don't have to have the best player guarding me every night like I've had my entire career.
I don't know if the third-best defender is going to guard me. I wish you good fortune.
