A pregnant woman in Texas was given a traffic ticket this week for using the HOV lane in her car instead of the regular one. A pregnant woman is fighting her ticket because her unborn child is considered a passenger.
The woman told The Dallas Morning News that an officer peeked in to see if anyone else was in the car. I pointed to my stomach and said my baby is here. She is a human. The man said it had to be two people outside of the body.
The Supreme Court ruled that personhood begins before a baby is born. She will fight for that right during her court appearance later this month.
The woman's argument is strong because of the history of abortion in Texas. A woman was taken to prison for an abortion she did herself. The charges against the young mother were dropped after she gave birth to a stillborn child.
The state can't have it both ways, because it's not fair to charge women with crimes related to the personhood of a fetus and not afford that same personhood when it's in her favor. The common factor in every equation is whether or not the government benefits from their legal definition of bodies.
There is more about the war on anti- abortion states.
