An 18-year-old was arrested in connection with a shooting that sent shoppers scrambling inside an Atlanta-area Walmart.

Matthew Thomas Jr. is accused of shooting a man during an argument in the meat section at Walmart. The store was visited by officers just after 7pm.

An off-duty officer was working there and called for help after hearing gunshots. Several agencies responded to the incident, including the South Fulton Police Department and the U.S. marshals.

Police said Thomas ran away from the store. He argued with another man moments before he was shot.

A man was taken to a hospital after being shot. As of July 8, his condition was unknown.

A customer said she was waiting to check out when the sound of gunfire caused people to rush out of the store.

People said, 'Gun!' It's time to run! She spoke to the news station. I ran out the store with two children and everyone was running. We are shopping in Walmart. We are running because we want to live. It's sad

Walmart employees said they were turned away and feared for their lives when they saw the police presence.

A worker told the station that they were told to leave at 9. We wondered if our co-workers were injured.

Online records show that Thomas was held without bond after he was booked into the jail.

It is south of downtown Atlanta.
