The 12-inch MacBook was discontinued three years ago today. The portable notebook was removed from the online store on July 9, 2019.

The 12-inch MacBook was the first fanless notebook from Apple and it weighed just two pounds. The original model's standard specifications included a 1.1 GHz dual-core Intel Core M processor, integrated Intel HD Graphics 5300, 8 gigabytes of RAM, and a 128 gigabytes solid state drive.

The 12-inch MacBook had a single port for charging and data transfer, a Force Touch trackpad, and a terraced battery design that allowed for a larger battery to fit inside the notebook.

According to a March 2015 press release, Apple has reinvented the notebook with the new MacBook. The MacBook shows a new innovation. The new MacBook has a fanless design, a full-size keyboard that's 34 percent thinner, and an all- new Force Touch trackpad.

The first MacBook model to feature Apple's butterfly switch keyboard design, which is prone to failure, was dropped from the entire MacBook line after years of complaints.

The 12-inch MacBook went without a hardware refresh for two years before being discontinued.

It is clear that the 12-inch MacBook was hampered by the thermal constraints of Intel, with the notebook's thin and light design more appropriate for performant yet power efficient Apple Silicon chips. Mark Gurman reported last month that Apple was considering a new 12-inch notebook, but it was not clear if it would be called a MacBook, MacBook Air, or MacBook Pro. Prior to the original MacBook Pro being released, Apple offered a higher-end 12-inch PowerBook G4 in the mid-2000s.
