Oprah is mourning the death of her father, who died after a battle with cancer. According to one of Vernon's long time employees, he died Friday night in East Nashville, Tennessee. The councilman broke the news. Oprah had just been in town to celebrate her father. She surprised him by organizing a Vernon Winfrey appreciation day. Oprah said, "My father is ill, so we wanted to be able to have all of his friends come and celebrate him while he is able to receive the joy." That is what we are doing. Vernon sat in a barber chair in the middle of the backyard barbecue as his friends and family celebrated him. He owned and operated Winfrey Barber and Beauty Shop for more than 50 years. One of his employees said that Verne would take the shirt off his back. Vernon's daughter was proud of her dad and has celebrated his accomplishments for a long time. Oprah took her cameras back for a visit with her father when she was a talk show host. It was obvious that she was excited to plan the event. Oprah posted videos and photos with family members preparing for the BBQ and said she was getting back to her Nashville roots. Vernita Lee died at the age of 83. Oprah said she wanted to give her father flowers while he was here, and she couldn't have timed it better. Vernon was older than 80. I am sad.
