George R.R. Martin on red carpet for Tolkien.

George R.R. Martin, author of the A Song of Ice and Fire book series, has provided an update on his long-awaited novel, "Winds of Winter."

On his site, the writer confirmed that his upcoming book will differ from the series based on his Song of Ice and Fire as his conclusion is still being worked out. I get asked a lot if A Song of Ice and Fire will end the same way as Game of Throne. I am much more of a gardener than an architect would be. As I write my stories, they change. I know where I am going, the final destinations, the big set pieces, they have been my head for years in the case of A Song of Ice and Fire. He wrote that there were lots of devils in the details and that sometimes the ground changed under his feet.

I don't like to give detailed updates on WIN DS. He said that he was working on it and that he would continue to work on it. Some of the things you saw in Game of Throne will also be seen in The Winds of Winter. This was inevitable when you thought about it. The novels are larger and more complex than the series. There are certain things that won't happen in the book. It's the same as versa.

Martin has always been transparent about how long it takes him to write and that he plans on including more than what was seen on the show. There are characters in the books that are never seen on the show. Major characters who were on the show will be impacted by what they say and do. The list is lengthy. WINDS is taking so long due to all this. This is difficult. Not all of the characters who survived until the end of Game of Throne will survive until the end of A Song of Ice and Fire. Yes, some will. It's absolutely true. It's possible that most of the time. I can change my mind again next week.

It doesn't sound like an update, but it does sound encouraging. When A Song of Ice and Fire is published, we will be happy.
