The modified Game Boy on the right retains many design elements of the original one on the left.

If Nintendo made a Game Boy without the Advance part, what would it look like? Obirux, a video game console and handheld mod, created a new version of the Game Boy handheld that retained the aesthetic language of the 1989 model but was reoriented to be a horizontally handled system.

The Game Boy DMG 0B "prototype" is a tribute to the original model number of the Game Boy DMG-01. Obirux has a brief list of what went into this modification, which included the sacrifice of two original Game Boy shells. A modern screen upgrade that offers a much clearer image along with backlighting was offered when the original screen was removed and replaced with a modified version. It is an upgrade over the fine-for-its-time dot matrix screen. A green pallet that echoes the original dot matrix display can be seen on the screen.

The battery was upgraded as well. Obirux replaced the four AA batteries with a Li-ion battery that not only saves a lot of space but also means the cells wouldn't have to be separated into different parts of the handheld. The buttons were moved around the case. The authentic retro look of the handheld is enhanced by the fact that it has a barrel power connection instead of ausb plug.

They are an artist and work in construction in London. The WideBoy is one of the many mod built by Obirux that end up for sale on their website.

I am a big fan of GameCube and Obirux has a GameCube PC mod that I would love to see. It would be great to see another GameCube handheld with a disc drive.
