Spain survive scare with injured Putellas watching on

Spain are the odds-on favorites to win the competition for the first time after a run of form that saw them go into the tournament without a defeat in 23 matches.

Their preparation was hampered by two injuries.

The reigning Ballon d'Or holder, Alexia Putellas, suffered a serious knee injury in training on Tuesday and was ruled out for the rest of the season.

Putellas posed for a picture with her team-mates before the match started, while she was on crutches.

Manchester United's Ona Batlle was denied by Korpela, who then saved from Laia Aleixandri, as Spain went top of Group B with the Danes and Germans playing later in the day.

The misses did not cost the game, with Caldentey adding a penalty with the final kick of the match.

Finland start well, but overpowered

They didn't see much of the ball after the miss and had to defend deep and in numbers.

The goal was ruled out as the ball had gone out before Esther Gonzalez crossed it, even though the goalkeeper thought she had conceded.

However, it was just a brief respite as two goals in 15 minutes saw Spain take control of the game.

Eveliina Summanen had a rare chance in the second half, but couldn't get a shot off before the game was out of their reach.

The last time the tournament was held in England, the Finns made it to the semi-finals but will need to win their next two games to stay in the competition.
