Despite uproar from employees over a previous special from Dave Chappelle, who made comments about trans people, a new Dave Chappelle special was released on Thursday.

The theater that was supposed to be named after Chappelle was actually called the Theater for artistic freedom and expression.

Chappelle addressed students at the school who did not agree with the jokes he made in the special, which some critics called transphobia.

The first special from Dave Chapelle's Home Team was released earlier this year.

In What's In A Name, Chappelle says "the more you say I can't say anything, the more urgent it is for me to say it" It has nothing to do with what you're telling me. My freedom of artistic expression is what makes it happen. That is something that I value.

Key Background

In 2016 it was reported that Chappelle agreed to produce three comedy specials for 20 million dollars each. The Age of Spin and Deep in the Heart of Texas were two of the four stand up episodes that Chappelle dropped on the platform. He made a lot of jokes about trans people in Sticks and Stones. The special was the most popular stand-up content to date. Chappelle continued to joke about the trans community in The Closer, which prompted an employee-led protest and intense outside backlash towards the comedian and his company. The culture of the company ended because of the disagreement between employees and leadership over the special, according to former employees. The lines of communication had been open for a long time before Dave Chappelle. Employees were told that if they can't work on titles they think are harmful, they may not be the best place for them. There was an attack on Chappelle at the festival.

Tangent

There was a stand-up set from Ricky Gervais that was criticized for being transphobia. The special was described as dangerous.
