Don't play the violin in New York.
John Catsimatidis, the former mayoral candidate, radio host and supermarket magnate, rushed to Rudy Giuliani's defense during a radio interview with Mayor Eric Adams on Friday, saying the former mayor had a medical procedure after making the accusation that a man who patted him on the back actually assaults him
Catsimatidis told Adams that Giuliani was in a weak state of mind because he wasn't breathing well. After the weekend, he had a procedure to bring his oxygen count up.
The weekend Catsimatidis was referring to is the one of June 26, when Giuliani, who served as New York City mayor for much of the 1990s, was appearing at a campaign event with his son, Andrew, who was running for governor.
One of the supermarket's employees patted Giuliani on the back and said "What's up, scumbag" during the event.
The man, Daniel Gill, was arrested and spent a night in jail after he was accused of hitting the ex-mayor.
The video shows that the pat to the former mayor's back didn't involve much force.
Adams spoke to the district attorney about the incident.
Gill was jailed for 24 hours for an offense that he did not commit. A pat on the back isn't an assault.
The force of the pat to Giuliani's back was irrelevant according to Catsimatidis.
Catsimatidis said that the man felt it because of his health issues.
He wouldn't let the issue slide and stuck to the point he's been making for more than a week now: "his depiction of what happened was far different from that video."
He said that was the issue. A New Yorker who did not commit a crime and spent 24 hours in jail because of an assault is troubling to me.
That's right, that's right.
