The US marshals shot and killed a Black man in a parking garage in Minneapolis in June of 2021. George Floyd was murdered by a police officer. Private security groups were hired to prevent damage to properties as the police couldn't keep up with the protests. Most private security guards are not trained to manage protest activity. According to documents obtained by MIT Technology Review, several private organizations were providing security at and around the parking garage where Smith was killed.
