They know that Amazon has captured lightning in a bottle. The Boys is one of the best shows on television right now, and the third season has been the best so far. One of the few remaining shows that knows how to get season-enders right is The Boys. The following arespoilers.
As we watched Maeve and Soldier Boy go up in a nuclear explosion, the show saved both of them and put them on ice.
Even though fake-outs don't work in other series, this was the right call. With how well Jensen Ackles did with Soldier Boy, leaving the door open for him to come back is a good idea. In the finale, he talked about how his father was disappointed that he had taken a short cut in becoming a superhero. He does the exact same thing to his own son, Homelander, which made you almost feel bad for the person. It was almost done.
The show has done some incredibly interesting things with Homelander this season, a character that has always been the key fixture of the series, but Antony Starr keeps getting better and better and we are now at a point where he needs to be considered for an award. I think Homelander wanted to have a real family with Soldier Boy and Ryan in order to save his own skin, but it was also a tactic to save his own skin.
We are entering dark new territory with Homelander, where it is not just that he is evil, but that he is also evil, and a certain segment of the population is embracing that. Before tonight, it was just a leaked video of him making threats, but in the final scene, he throws something at a critic who called him a fascist and lasers him. The crowd is loud Homelander beams, realizing he can be his true, violent self, and we even get a small smile from Ryan, an image which the show realized was disturbing.
The Seven is no longer a concept in the show. One of the great moments was that Hughie decided not to use the V to teleport, instead supporting and her power and trusting her to get the job done, which she does. Black Noir was killed by Homelander because he kept information about Soldier Boy from him. Homelander, A-Train and The Deep are little more than disgruntled sidekicks at the moment. A-Train appears to be on a path to redemption, but what form that would take is not clear. The Deep is not a good place to live.
We are moving in a specific direction, where Homelander remains a Trump stand-in and he has now cultivated a very public, increasingly violent following where the end goal appears to be to overthrow the government. Supe Victoria, Homelander's future Vice President, is probably going to take the main job due to an "accident" in the future. I'm pretty sure Homelander wants to rule the world someday with his son, but he wants millions of people to cheer him on. What can stop him? The Boys without Homelander is the main villain. Is it possible that we can ever get there?
I can't wait for the fourth season to start.
