The former prime minister of Japan died after being shot.
The Nara Medical University Hospital confirmed that Abe died Friday evening.
The former prime minister was shot while campaigning for the governing Liberal Democratic Party. The country's upper house is going to be up for election on Sunday.
There were gunshots heard at 11:30 a.m. Abe was taken to the hospital.
The doctor who operated on Abe said he was taken to the emergency room.
He said that he was in a state of cardiopulmonary arrest when he arrived at the hospital. They tried to revive him, but he died at 17:03.
NBC reported that one person had been taken into custody.
The prime minister said that the attack was despicable and barbaric and that it was still being investigated.
Gun violence in Japan is extremely rare. Handguns are not allowed in the country and anyone who wants to own an air rifle or shotgun has to go through extensive training.
In August 2020 Abe stepped down as prime minister due to his health problems.
The former prime minister sought to revive Japan's economic growth through a range of stimuli known as Abenomics, though analysts have said it has had mixed results for the world's third-largest economy.
