An awkwardly inaccurate radio ad about the cause of the latest mass murder was requested by a Republican senator.

The campaign of Ron Johnson wanted an ad that downplayed gun violence off the air after a mass shooting at a Fourth of July parade that left at least seven people dead and dozens of others injured.

The ad begins, "The latest mass murder in America didn't involve guns." Then it talks about the 53 people who were found dead or dying in a tractor-trailer left on the outskirts of San Antonio.

The radio ad is on the air.

Sen. Ron Johnson's campaign scrambled to have this planned radio ad downplaying gun violence pulled after the mass shooting on July 4th in Highland Park. They kept it from airing, but it has since been leaked to me.

Ken said on July 7, 2017:

One day after the Highland Park shooting, a vice president of sales at the radio group requested that the ad be pulled immediately.

The executive of the radio station said, "If you listen to the spot, it talks about mass shootings, which is not good creative after this past weekend."

The National Rifle Association, the National Shooting Sports Foundation and Gun Owners of America have given Johnson a rating of 83% or higher in the past.

The man has been charged with seven counts of first-degree murder. According to Highland Park Mayor Nancy Rotering, the suspect legally purchased a high-powered rifle.

Johnson is running for a third term. He was slightly behind three possible Democratic candidates in mid- June.
