Biggest draft questions

1. Montreal Canadiens: Juraj Slafkovsky, LW

The team is from Finnland and has a rank of INTS 1.

DOB: 3/30/2004 | Ht: 6-3 | Wt: 218 | Shot: L

Stats: GP: 31 | G: 5 | A: 5

He's a good fit because he was the defacto No. 1 pick for years. The fans of teams looking to tank. The Slovakian is the first overall. At the Beijing Winter Olympics, the 6-3 winger made a huge impact. He's not going to run over people even though he's large. It's not a pick about what Juraj Slafkovsky can do, it's a pick about what he can do. A draft observer told me recently that he has all the tools he needs. The ceiling is high enough for the Habs to not do Wright things.

2. New Jersey Devils: Simon Nemec, D

Nitra is a team with a rank of INTS3.

DOB: 2/15/2004 | Ht: 6-0 | Wt: 190 | Shot: R

Stats: GP: 39 | G: 1 | A: 25

With Slafkovsky off the board, theDevils passed over the center's and the defenseman's to pick the puck- moving defender. Two Slovaks were in the top two picks of the Olympics. One of the "plug-and-play" options in the top 10 for his NHL-readiness was Nemec, a right-handed Defenseman. He had six points in eight games at the world championship. In the last five years, theDevils have drafted a defense in the first round four times. The Devils may have felt that they were at center. They're solidifying the back end with the addition of those two.

3. Arizona Coyotes: Logan Cooley, C

The US U-18 team is ranked 2nd in the nation.

DOB: 5/4/2004 | Ht: 5-10 | Wt: 174 | Shot: L

Stats: GP: 51 | G: 27 | A: 48

TheCoyotes had their pick of centers. They chose the USA Hockey National Team Development Program product because of Wright's decline. The 5-10 frame may have been a problem in the past. Not currently in the NHL. The strong two-way center cites Patrick Kane as an inspiration for his play, but admits he needs some work on his long-range shooting. Everything is needed by the coyotes. Many scouts say that they get a player who has more upside than Wright. He had 75 points this year.

4. Seattle Kraken: Shane Wright, C

Kingston is a team with a rank of NAS 1.

DOB: 1/5/2004 | Ht: 6-0 | Wt: 191 | Shot: R

Stats: GP: 63 | G: 32 | A: 62

Wright's slide to No. 4 felt terrible. The Kingston Frontenacs center was the top prospect for a long time. As a 15-year-old freshman, he put up 39 goals and 66 points in 58 games to win the Ontario Hockey League's rookies of the year award.

After the COVID-19 epidemic cost him all of the 2020-21 season, he came back in 2021-22 with an lackluster start that produced only 22 points in 19 games. He finished with 94 points in 63 games, but many scouts predicted that Wright would open the door for others to overtake him as the top scorer. That's correct. Arizona had a different center than New Jersey, so they went with a different number.

Wright was removed from the board by the Kraken. Wright has the ability to become a top center. Wright has good size and is a strong skater who can beat defenders to the puck. Add to that excellent hockey sense and outstanding playmaking ability and you have a recipe for success.

Wright will be motivated when he reaches the NHL. He is more likely to be NHL ready than most No. 4 picks. That's great news for the expansion, who can make Wright a franchise centerpiece.

5. Philadelphia Flyers: Cutter Gauthier, LW

The US U-18 team is ranked 3rd in the nation.

DOB: 1/19/2004 | Ht: 6-2 | Wt: 189 | Shot: L

Stats: GP: 54 | G: 34 | A: 31

The way he fits is finally predictable. In most mock drafts, Gauthier was selected for the Philadelphia Flyer. He was a member of the development team and played with another player. He is a good driver of the net. He knows how to use his frame to win battles along the boards. He's named "Cutter" and he's a member of the Philadelphia Flyer, which makes sense.

6. Columbus Blue Jackets: David Jiricek, D

The team is from the Czech Republic and has a rank of INTS 4.

DOB: 11/28/2003 | Ht: 6-3 | Wt: 189 | Shot: R

Stats: GP: 29 | G: 5 | A: 6

7. Chicago Blackhawks: Kevin Korchinski, D

The team is from Seattle and has a rank of 7.

DOB: 6/21/2004 | Ht: 6-2 | Wt: 185 | Shot: L

Stats: GP: 67 | G: 4 | A: 61

8. Detroit Red Wings: Marco Kasper, C

The team is from Sweden and has a rank of INTS 5.

DOB: 4/8/2004 | Ht: 6-1 | Wt: 183 | Shot: L

Stats: GP: 46 | G: 7 | A: 4
