The basketball player pleaded guilty to drug charges in a Russian courtroom on Thursday but not before she received a note from the president.
With the hope that a guilty plea might be her best shot at a lighter sentence in a sham trial, the WBNA player admitted to taking hashish oil into Russia by accident.

The defense hopes that the plea will be considered by the court as a mitigated factor and that there will be no severe sentence.
According to the attorneys, the trial was expected to conclude by the beginning of August.
She has been held in Russia for more than four months after authorities said they found a small amount of marijuana in her luggage.
"Brittney has admitted to making a mistake and I hope the Russian authorities understand that and respond with compassion," said Rev. Al Sharpton.
There will be a rally in Chicago on Friday to call for her release.
The fear is that Moscow is trying to get Washington to back down in the wake of the invasion of Ukraine.
"She is in the fight of her life right now, which is why we will be in Chicago to show our support for the Administration and their efforts to bring her home as quickly as possible," Sharpton said. She must find strength through this difficult time.
Biden and Harris called Cherelle to assure her of the administration's efforts to free the basketball star.
