The first presumptive case of monkeypox was reported by the Florida Department of Health less than eight weeks ago.

As the number of new monkeypox cases in the United States and more than 50 other countries has gone up, the number of cases in Florida has gone up as well, to 73 as of Thursday, the third most of any state.

More than 70% of all reported cases in Florida are in South Florida. According to the Florida Department of Health, Broward leads the state with 40 cases.

The professor of infectious diseases at the Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine says that anyone who is doing healthcare right now should be concerned.

The majority of people diagnosed with monkeypox in Florida are middle-aged, with more than 70% of cases occurring in people between the ages of 35 and 54. According to the department's disease repository, they usually acquired the disease in Florida, rather than from somewhere else.

Monkeypox can be spread from person to person through contact with the infectious rash, scabs or body fluids of someone who is infectious with the virus, and it can also be transmitted via respiratory secretions during face-to-face contact or intimate physical contact.

Men having sex with men is the main population we have seen so far in the US. They have been having the kind of interactions with each other in large party settings. That is a really good spreader.

More than 6,000 cases worldwide

The same trends are being seen by epidemiologists around the world. The majority of the monkeypox cases that have been reported in 58 countries have been in men, according to the World Health Organization.

Children, pregnant women, the immunocompromised and the elderly are all at increased risk.

There are a number of symptoms, including a rash, fever, muscle pain, and vomiting. There have been no deaths.

The CDC is distributing the monkeypox detection test more widely through commercial labs, in order to encourage people at risk of contracting the disease to get the vaccine. People need to visit their healthcare provider to collect samples for the test.

There are signs of monkeypox.

Why is monkeypox dangerous?

The CDC says that monkeypox was first noticed in a colony of monkeys. In 1970 the first human case was recorded.

There are a number of species of orthopoxviruses that can cause diseases in humans and animals.

There are different types of humans, including tall ones, short ones, fat ones, and thin ones. The clade 3B.1 is the most common type of monkeypox in the world.

Marty said that public health experts were more than a bit surprised when they analyzed the "book of life" or the genetics of the monkeypox strain currently spreading across the globe. The experts found a change in the way the virus works.

The HIV virus that causes AIDS, as well as the hepatitis B and the herpesviruses, are all caused by the same enzyme.

Although scientists don't fully understand how this enzyme impacts the current monkeypox variant, they do know that it allows viruses to enter human cells, spread from person to person, and evade the immune system.

How does it spread?

The monkeypox virus can be spread from person to person through direct contact with infections, respiratory droplets and genital fluids. The virus can be contracted by being bitten or scratched by an animal.

There are documented cases in Europe of healthcare workers contracting monkeypox after handling sheets and towels of patients who have been exposed to the disease.

The disease is not always fatal.

Most of the cases that we have seen have not been very serious except for the blisters that it causes.

Vaccines, testing and treatment

There are two vaccines that are licensed by the FDA to prevent monkeypox infections. The former vaccine is very safe and can't replicate inside our bodies. There is a virus that is competent in replicating.

Testing protocols are being increased Labcorp, one of the largest clinical lab networks in the world, began testing for monkeypox using the CDC's orthopoxviruses test. The current testing capacity will be doubled by this.

The ability of commercial labs to test for monkeypox is a key pillar in the CDC's strategy to fight the disease. It will make it easier for providers and patients to access tests by using existing provider-to-lab relationships.

There are no approved treatments for monkeypox, but there are some that work for it. According to the interim clinical guidance from the CDC, there are four different antivirals that can be used for the treatment of monkeypox.

Prioritizing vaccines for LGBTQ community

The Florida health department is working with the CDC in South Florida to raise awareness in the community and among medical providers.

Medical providers need to be aware of clinical symptoms for early identification and treatment. Various community organizations have been given educational material by the DOH.

The health department has been distributing treatment and vaccines from the National Strategic Stockpile to individuals who meet the criteria for treatment and vaccinations and follow the guidelines from the CDC for monitoring individuals who have identified a close contact.

Gay, bisexual, and other men over the age of 18 who have sex with men are being prioritized for vaccinations due to a shortage of the JYNNEOS vaccine.

The public information officer at the health department said that people who are worried about contracting monkeypox should contact a medical provider.

The disease can become a long-term risk if public health officials can't contain it quickly.

With so much human-to-human transmission, we are very concerned that rodents in people's homes can become sick and even die from it. It becomes a problem in our country and other countries. She said that it would be an ongoing problem for all of us.

The tide is rising against those trying to contain the monkeypox.

There were over 900 cases in the 20th century. Over 7,000 confirmed cases have been reported in two months.
