There was a time when a comic book movie could be told in a realistic way.

Christopher Nolan and Christian Bale faced skepticism when they started their Batman trilogy.

In a recent interview with The Washington Post, Bale said he would tell people we were doing Batman, but take him seriously. I had a lot of people laugh at me and say that it's not going to work.

The idea changed how Hollywood viewed comic-book material.

The stories would no longer take place in cartoonish settings with crazy performances. They will now be in the real world.

Bale and Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy earned over $2 billion at the box office and won 2 Oscars. A more grounded version of the character was introduced with "The Batman."

The trilogy proved those people wrong. Bale said that it helped along the way, but he wasn't sure if it kicked-start the universe.

Bale is back in the comic-book world, playing the villain in the new movie "Thor: Love and Thunder."
