Scorecard

India defeated England by 50 runs in the first Twenty20 at the Ageas Bowl, as Hardik Pandya led the way.

Buttler was dismissed for a duck after his side were set a challenging target of 199.

In his first seven deliveries, Hardik removed Liam Livingstone for a duck and also removed Dawid Malan for 21.

After 6.1 overs, England were 33-4 and could not recover as they were demolished in the last over for 148.

Hardik added to his 51 from 33 balls, which was the highest score in India's 198-8.

Chris Jordan was the pick of England's attack with 2-23 as the tourists looked on course for a total well in excess of 200.

After England's Test victory on Tuesday, India's white-ball side hit back, taking a one-game lead in the three- match series.

If Buttler's team can win the second match at Edgbaston on Saturday, they will level the series.

Tough start for Buttler's England

Two days after England's win at Edgbaston, these sides were back in action and the hosts were riding a wave of confidence.

Without the likes of Bairstow, England couldn't repeat their red-ball heroics at the start of a new era.

The games are significant because they are England's first since the retirement of their World Cup winning captain, and also because it is just three months until the T20 World Cup in Australia where both sides are favorites.

India's total was not much better than England at the halfway point.

The opening two overs of England's chase set the tone for the rest of the game.

Buttler, the form batter in the world in this format, was dismissed by a brilliant delivery which hooped in, cut back off the pitch and went onto the stump.

The topsy-turvy nature of T20s makes him believe that his side can hit back immediately.

England's top order struggle

Buttler's dismissal was backed up brilliantly by Arshdeep.

When number three Malan moved to 21 with a fourth boundary, he played onto his stumps off Hardik when attempting to run the ball through the field.

Livingstone followed just three balls later, gloving a scoop off Hardik to the keeper, and Roy's pain was ended when he sliced an attempted drive to the first ball of the all-rounder's next over.

The two surviving dropped chances in a stand of 61 gave England a small hope. They tried to attack Chahal to end England's hopes.

The hosts were seven down an over later when Hardik claimed his fourth, and the score was 1006.

Arshdeep was rewarded for his fine opening spell by taking the final two wickets of Topley and Parkinson.

Bowler's fightback in vain

England's bowling depth is being tested more than their batting by injury and the intense schedule because of the absence of two important players.

Ishan Kishan was caught off a top-edged sweep for eight as India lost their captain in the first over after winning the toss and electing to bat.

Three left-arm seamers were punished by Suryakumar and Hardik.

The England bowlers did a good job. After 13 overs, a score of 220 looked like it could be achieved.

Jordan used the short ball effectively, bowling bouncers to dismiss Deepak Hooda for 33 and Suryakumar for 39, while Hardik's was ended by another short ball from Topley.

In the last three overs, Topley, Jordan and Mills gave up 20 runs.
