We have good news if Facebook has been the main roadblock between you and virtual reality.
Beginning in August, you won't need a Facebook account to use Meta's virtual reality headsets. Every new Quest owner will need to create a new Meta account once they start using it. Existing device owners will need to make a Meta account in order to continue using their current setup. Meta says that the account is just a way to manage your purchased games and apps.
If you're a virtual reality vet, you'll have to create a new profile if you want to use the Meta account. You can use this location to make a social presence, connect your accounts, and manage your followers. In that way, it will be more similar to the photo-sharing website than it is to the social networking site. When this change happens, you will follow your existing friends back.

In other words, if you already have an Oculus profile, you will be shifted over to a MetaHorizon profile that functions the same. If you log into a virtual reality headset with your Meta account, you can decouple it. Nobody has to have a Facebook account if they want to use a Meta headset in the future.
When the switch occurs, the biggest hangup is for people who had existing Oculus accounts that were tied to Facebook. After you decouple Meta account and Facebook account data, it will still be linked for up to 90 days, according to Meta.
“If you remove your Meta account from the same Accounts Center as your Facebook account, it can take us up to 90 days to stop combining your Meta account data and Facebook data for things like ads, personalization, or suggestions of friends or accounts to follow. After this time, we’ll only use your Meta account and Facebook account data to help us more accurately count people who use our services and for integrity purposes to help keep you and others safe. For example, taking action against a Meta account if it is flagged for spam or abuse. For more, see here."
This should be good news for people who have avoided Quest headsets because of the Facebook requirement. Meta still owns the product and benefits, so you have to think about that. Well.
