When it first launched its network of Supercharger stations, the company didn't think about interoperability, as it was the only serious EV company around at the time. Demand for charging station access has risen as other companies have entered the EV market.
The open-access Supercharger pilot program will be coming to the US in 2021. According to a recent White House fact sheet, it could be by the end of the year.
The fact sheet stated that "Later this year,Tesla will begin production of new Supercharger equipment that will enable non-Tesla EV drivers in North America to useTesla Superchargings." The "Charge Your Non-Tesla" option is available to American EV owners if they download the latestTesla app.
Over the course of a year, the company has expanded access to its European charging network. Only select stations in each nation are open to non-owners. Every Supercharging open-access is in the Netherlands. To get around the company's proprietary charging plug shape, as well as ensure that the Supercharger's software can securely handshake with the new non-Tesla EV, the company will need to install adapter at its stations.
