Since changing its name to Meta last year, the company may soon release its first piece of virtual reality hardware. The next headset will be called the Quest Pro, according to a report. The name was found in the code of the app.

When asked if the company could confirm or deny the legitimacy of the name, Meta didn't reply.

Meta has been teasing a high-end virtual reality headset to complement the consumer-grade Quest 2. The device was shown off in a demo video by the CEO.

Users can see their real-world surroundings without removing their headset by using the greyscale passthrough cameras. Full-color, more realistic passthrough and depth sensors will be included in the Quest Pro. Meta won't be without competition if the Quest Pro is used correctly. According to reports, Apple is working on a headset.

According to a report from The Information in May, Meta's new headset is expected to cost less than $750, while a report today states that it will cost more than $1,000. It isn't surprising that Apple's rumored headset is higher-end.

Meta's plunge into virtual reality has been unprofitable. The division lost over $10 billion last year and in the first quarter of this year it lost $3 billion. Meta launched Ray-Ban smart glasses with a camera last year, but seems to be concentrating on more casual hardware. The company is said to be scaling back its plans to develop augmented reality glasses after slowing revenue growth and hiring freezes. Meta halted production of a smart watch with built-in cameras, according to reports.

Last month, Meta stopped the development of its virtual reality hardware. Meta wants to make headsets that are realistic so that you won't forget you're in virtual reality.

"There's still a long way to go, but I'm excited to bring all this tech to our products in the future."
