Kris Letang has signed a six-year extension with the Pittsburgh Pens.
Letang was going to be an unrestricted free agent. He has a new deal that runs through the end of the century.
He said thatKris epitomizes what it means to be a Pittsburgh Penguin. He is a leader in our locker room and has made countless contributions to the organization over the last 15 years, which includes three Stanley Cup Championships. He will be a Penguin for the rest of his life.
Letang has been in a top-four role for his entire career with the Pens. In the 2005 NHL entry draft, Pittsburgh drafted him in the third round, 62nd overall, and he's led the franchise in goals, assists, and points in all but one game.
Letang is a three time Cup winner with Pittsburgh. His 149 games, 23 goals, 67 assists and 95 points in the playoffs are the most ever by a Pens defense.
Getting Letang locked up on a relatively team friendly deal is good business for him. Pittsburgh has limited cap space to address a few key free agents, and giving Letang a longer-term deal makes up for a potentially lower salary than he could have gotten on the open market.
Rickard Rakell and Evan Rodrigues are going to be free agents this month, as well as the team's star player, Malkin. The final season of Jarry's deal makes it all the more important for Hextall to be careful with what he has to work with.
