After designating a found footage horror video as "for kids", the creator of the video was not allowed to change the rating manually.
The issue apparently began over the holiday weekend, when the social network sent him an email telling him that it had auto-designated a video from his horror channel, Local58TV, as a show for children.
This bizarre change came despite my having set it as inappropriate for kids, and he added that he couldn't change it without an appeal.
The company's artificial intelligence moderators may have gotten their wires crossed because there is an episode of Local58TV called "Show For Children."
It takes just a few seconds to see that the title is tongue-in- cheek. The movie features a cartoon skeleton walking around a graveyard looking for love, only to encounter a number of monsters before dying and becoming one of them.
The "for kids" designation was reversed by YouTube after Ars wrote about it. The creator of the channel noted that account owners should be able to choose not to show their videos to children. It's not clear why the video's designation was changed from "made for adults" to "made for kids".
It's odd that the company wouldn't allow someone to change their rating to being not for kids because of the issues that they've had with labeling content as children's programming.
It's the type of thing that happens when you use artificial intelligence to moderate your content.
The creator of the video won't be allowed to change the rating.
