Southern fin whales have recovered to large numbers in Antarctica

Since commercial whaling was banned in 1986, large groups of southern fin whales have been seen.

The second largest whale in the world is the fin whales, which measure 22 metres long on average and weigh 70 tons. In the 20th century, their numbers plummeted as they were hunted for oil.

The southern hemisphere has a ban on fin whale hunting. There have been anecdotal reports of whales in the area.

The University of Hamburger in Germany has a professor who went to the Weddell Sea on a ship.

Researchers used a helicopter to survey 3251 kilometres of ocean. There were 100 groups of fin whales, consisting of up to four whales, and eight large groups of up to 150 whales feeding together.

It is amazing to see whales from the air because they are so close to one another. The splashes of water in your face feel like you are with them.

There are thousands of fin whales in the area.

The recovery of these whales is a good news story according to her. Climate change continues to be a threat and we need to make sure that this story can continue.
