After Johnson advocated for billions of dollars in military assistance to the country and supported harsh sanctions on Russia, the Ukrainian government held him up as one of its strongest allies during the war. Johnson has been a critic of Putin. A number of recent polls show high favorability ratings for Johnson among Ukrainians, while the Mayor of Odessa, Ukraine named Johnson an "honorary citizen" of the country. Zelensky told CNN he was confident the British policy would not change.
