There was a serious threat to Johnson's position of power when it was revealed that government members and staff held illegal parties during the COVID-19 lock down. The government banned gatherings in the interest of public health, causing outrage and accusations of hypocrisy. The scandal known as Partygate can be considered a key controversy in the lead up to Johnson's resignation, as well as the reason behind the vote of no confidence which Johnson survived.
Conservatives have been accused of sexual harassment. The deputy chief whip Chris Pincher resigned after being accused of sexual harassment. Johnson said he was aware of a complaint against Pincher.
The downfall of the cabinet and the ultimate ousting of Johnson are the result of these troubles. He narrowly retained his position as Conservative leader after a vote of no confidence. His time is coming to an end after a number of resignations from senior Cabinet Ministers.
The pound sterling, Britain's currency, and British stocks have increased in value after Johnson's resignation. The pound fell to a two-year low against the dollar on Tuesday as ministers stepped down.
There won't be a new general election to replace the prime minister.
The prime minister wants to remain in office until the autumn. The Conservative Party needs this in order to choose a new leader. There must always be a prime minister in office, with either Johnson remaining in the post or the queen appointing someone until a new leader is elected.
