As the country's economic crisis deepens, the president has asked the president of Russia to import fuel.

The Russian president gave Gotabaya Rajapaksa credit support after he asked for it in a phone call.

Protesters gathered outside of the parliament building in the capital to demand the resignation of the president. Food prices have doubled in the last month.

Two days after the energy minister said it had less than a day's worth of fuel left, the president requested that the country be restructured.

The country has been unable to pay for fuel imports because of the exhaustion of its foreign currency reserves.

Insider has previously reported that people have been queueing for gas for days and that the government has encouraged people to work from home to save fuel.

Putin was asked to restart Aeroflot's operations in Sri Lanka by the president.

Strengthening bilateral relations in sectors such as tourism, trade and culture was paramount in reinforcing the friendship our two nations share, he said.

As SriLankan Airlines prepared to cancel a number of flights due to the lack of fuel, the request came as a result. Jet fuel from India is being brought in by the airline.

Insider previously reported that Sri Lanka is in discussions with India, Japan, and China about forming an aid consortium in order to save its economy.

China and India have been buying Russian oil at discounted prices despite the sanctions against Russia.
