Los Angeles Angels star Shohei Ohtani extends streak of starts without earned run to four

Shohei Ohtani continued his recent run of dominance on the mound, allowing one unearned run while striking out 10 in the Los Angeles Angels win over the Miami Marlins.

The third longest streak by an Angels starter in the last 50 years has been by Ohtani. It was his fourth straight start without allowing an earned run and his third with at least 10 strikeouts and 0 earned runs; he's the sixth pitcher to accomplish that since earned runs became official.

The most important thing is that Ohtani made his pitches when he needed to. I'm part of the ball club and it's huge when we win.

Ohtani gave up two hits and three walks while winning his fifth start in a row. Cooper's sacrifice fly broke up Ohtani's no-hitter, but he wasn't charged with a run because of a throwing error.

During his current stretch of successful outings, Ohtani has an average of 0.27 and has limited opponents to 16 hits.

Ohtani said that he was able to go without worry. It's a big reason why I'm doing well.

In four at-bats, Mike Trout didn't hit a home run, but he did score. Through the first five games of Los Angeles' nine-game trip, Trout is 1 for 21 with 13 strikeouts, the most strikeouts of his career. The Angels snapped a four-game skid with the help of Max Stassi.

Since the beginning of June, the Angels are 5-1 with Ohtani on the mound and 6-21 without him.

Ohtani's two-run single with the bases loaded gave Los Angeles a 3-1 lead in the fifth. Ohtani became the first player since 1920 to have at least 2 RBIs, a stolen base and 10 strikeouts in the same game, when he stole second base in the seventh.

"He's one of the better pitchers in baseball, and you're going to see him at the plate the same day, too,'' Stassi said about Ohtani. He's a great pitcher and also a great hitter.

The Angels' lead was padded by two singles from Taylor Ward and Luis Rengifo.

The six-game winning streak is over. Rogers allowed three runs, four hits, walked two, struck out five and hit two batters.
